CVEA and Alyeska Finalize Agreement to Exchange Energy
Copper Valley Electric and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company Finalize an Agreement to Exchange Energy
On May 17, 2022, Copper Valley Electric Association (CVEA) and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (APSC) finalized an agreement to begin construction of an electrical interconnection between the CVEA grid and the Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT), allowing them to exchange energy.
This project will benefit APSC and the members of CVEA. The interconnection will allow the VMT to export surplus electricity to CVEA when available, avoiding incineration of excess hydrocarbon vapors, and in turn, CVEA will provide electric energy to the VMT when VMT’s own generation is not sufficient to meet its needs without the use of diesel fuel. This exchange process could reduce carbon emissions for the VMT and reduce diesel consumption for both entities.
According to Travis Million, CVEA CEO, “the Cooperative looks forward to this partnership with APSC. The project is expected to reduce the amount of costly diesel fuel used for generation, thereby helping the Co-op strive towards our strategic goal of reducing dependence on diesel fuel, while continuing our mission of providing affordable electric service.”
Construction will begin in summer 2022 and project completion is expected in 2023.
